Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy Treatment

By Prenoy Yonerp at 2011-01-08 06:33:47
For some people, managing blood glucose levels will slow down or even prevent further diabetic peripheral neuropathy. However, it is important to realize that neuropathy is not always caused by fluctuating blood glucose levels.

This is important to know for two reasons. Firstly, if you have diabetes you have to be aware that you can be affected by neuropathy, even if you have normal blood glucose levels. Secondly, having neuropathy does not automatically mean that someone has been irresponsible with their blood glucose levels.

A body can encounter trauma resulting in peripheral neuropathy which simply stated means damage to the nervous system. When damage or trauma has been had to the nerve cells the body undergoes a lack of feeling and sensations where the trauma has occurred. This disease is a heartbreaking one that can leave a person struggling to control the obsessive tingling in their feet and numbness in their hands.

If you need them removed, your podiatrist is very skilled at taking corns and calluses off. He or she can also instruct you how to work on calluses (the ones that aren't too thick) using pumice stones or emery boards, but only if you promise to follow their instructions carefully. NEVER use medicated callus or corn removers, since these can eat into healthy skin and cause infections.

If you like, you can personally do up to the minute research on the treatment of virtually any health condition, including neuropathy on line. You'll find the traditional, the fringe, the alternatives, and it really can be dizzying. You like most patients have likely done so already.

This is usually the type of neuropathy meant when people say they have a peripheral neuropathy. If a spinal nerve root is involved it is called a radiculopathy such as sciatica from a herniated disc. If there is diffused involvement of the peripheral nerves it is called a polyneuropathy.

Diseases such as diabetes, AIDS, lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, hepatitis, and diphtheria, as well being exposed to toxic compounds like solvents, glue, nitrous oxide, and heavy metals can cause peripheral neuropathies. Even the drugs taken to treat cancer and AIDS may cause a neuropathy.

There are many acupuncture points on the body that can treat the above patterns as well as Chinese herbal formulas that can help treat peripheral neuropathy and reduce the symptoms. Additionally, nutritional recommendations may be made to help decrease the pain. Your practitioner may also recommend including a practice into your daily life such as meditation, tai chi, yoga, or biofeedback to help with the emotional side-effects and stress of chronic pain.

One of the most common side effects of diabetes is diabetic neuropathy. You might also hear it referred to as peripheral neuropathy. This is because the nerves in the peripheral areas of the body are affected. These areas include the feet as well as the hands. Numb feet and tingling feet as well as pain in your feet are often some of the first symptoms you might notice.

Speaking to your doctor about your symptoms will help your doctor better diagnose if you are in fact dealing with some form of nerve damage. Your doctor will most likely formulate a plan to help you gain control of your neuropathy and offer suggestions for pain relief.
